Haile Gebrselassie wins the 10k Bupa Great Manchester Run but hopes of regaining the record were hampered by strong winds. His aim of beating the 27m 1s time set by Kenyan, Micah Kogo was swept aside due to strong headwinds in latter part of the race. GebrselassieÕs winning time was 27m 39s and finishing ahead of Ali Mabrouk El  Zaidi of Libya (28m 13s) and UkraineÕs Sergey Lebid (28m 36s). Press release RSPCA - 270409.  The number of animals abandoned across England and Wales has increased by 57%  and look set to worsen. Nine week old puppy Honey, was on of three puppies was abandoned on 24 February 2009. (Pancake Tuesday). The other two were named Flip and Maple. They were found in a cardboard box on a doorstep on the Manor Estate, Sheffield, and were retrieved after a member of the public rang the National Cruelty Line: 0300 1234999. The annual event set at Gawthorpe, near Ossett, West Yorkshire, see male competitors carry a 1cwt (50kg) sack of coal a distance of 1108.25 yards (1012.5m) from the Royal Oak Public House to the Maypole on the village green. The current and World Records is 4mins. 6secs held by David Jones of Meltham. The women also compete over the same course but with a lighter load of 25lb (10kg).  The current World Record is held by Ruth Clegg, (27) of Hanging Heaton, with a time of 5mins 3secs. Rother Valley Country Park. Dan's 3k Fun Run. (Renamed in memory of Daniel Grice) a young leukemia patient at the Children's Hospital, who died in 2008. Celebrity Richard McCourt (Dick of TV stars Dick and Dom) supporting Dan's 3k Fun Run.

 New Urban Wetland Area unveiled at Centenary Riverside, Templeborough, Rotherham.  This forms a centre piece to the Economic, Social and Environmental Regeneration of Western Rotherham. The urban nature park is created from the compensatory flood plain which is inteded to reduce flood risk for Rotherham. 'Steel Henge' was created as an attempt to convey the influence that the steel industry has and continues to have on Rotherham and its people. Winner of the Men’s 3000m, Mo Farah (25) GBR and NI, completed the race in a time of 7:34.47 posting the third fastest time in the world this year and setting a new British record.
