| 10,000 fish move home. The Environment Agency are carrying out the mass transfer of an estimated 10,000 Roach from Hillsborough Park pond to Elsecar Canal, in South Yorkshire. A recent survey showed the pond was teeming with roach which meant stocks had to be reduced. Environment staff used a net 80 metre long net and three metres deep to capture the fish. Pete Turner, Fisheries Officer, said earlier, "The stocks had to be thinned out because fish have to fight for oxygen when a pond becomes too overcrowded, and during hot weather they become more stressed and thousands can end up dying". It is estimated the team were able to collect 800-1000lbs of fish, mostly roach. Sizes varied up to 6" in length and between 1 and 6 oz in weight. The fish were then transported in special tanks to their new home in the Elsecar Canal, South Yorkshire. Pictured: (L-R) Preparing the net for casting. Dan Smallwood, Ecological Appraisal. | The Haxey Hood. Two villages near Doncaster went into battle today, continuing a tradition spanning 700 years. The annual event takes place every 6 January. The two competing villages are Haxey and Westwoodside. Legend has it that in the 14th century, Lady de Mowbray was riding on the hill when her hood was blown away by the wind. The local farm workers scrambled to retrieve it. The locals have been re-enacting this every year since. A procession is led by the 'Fool' to the church green who makes a speech. During the speech a damp straw is placed behind him and lit. The smoke rises around him, this is known as 'Smoking the Fool'. Afterwards a rugby-type scrum (Sway) descend upon the Hood. The intention is to get the Sway Hood to one of the four local pubs. There can be up to 200 people in the Sway and the game can last several hours. Pictured: Dale Smith, The 'Fool', holding The Hood, standing on the Mowbray Stone by the Parish Church in Haxey. Whilst delivering his speech the traditional fire is lit behind him, known as 'Smoking the Fool'. 060109 | |
