Edlington School blaze. Fire crews received a call at 06:06 today about a fire at the old Edlington School, Doncaster. 10 appliances from South Yorkshire including one from Nottinghamshire attended the blaze. Three specials: a control unit, technical unit and ariel platform were also present. About 60 Firefighters dealt with the fire on Tait Avenue in Doncaster.  The four-storey building was reduced to a pile of mangled metal.  Group Manager Mr Phil Shillito said fire crews were still damping down the fire and an investigation into the cause would begin shortly. The old school is next to the site of the new school which will open on Thursday, 8 January 2009, as scheduled. The First Round of the Volleyball World Championships are being held at the English Institute of Sport – Sheffield (EIS) over three days, 2-4 January 2009. The event marks the GBR Men and Women entry to the World Championships for the first time. Other competing teams include Belarus, Israel, Portugal and Montenegro. Sunday, 4 January, included Men’s GBR v Belarus and Women’s GBR v Israel. GBR Men lost out to Belarus 23-25, 25-13, 22-25, 17-25. Pictured: GBR team players in blue. 25th Annual New Year’s Day  Boat Race and Bridge Jump. Held at Oakover Bridge, Mappleton, Derbyshire. All monies collected are donated to charities. Around £30,000 has been raised to date. This year’s charity is the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance. Teams of two paddle down the river Dove in boats. Contestants run from the river to the bridge where they leap 28ft into the water, which is nine feet deep. Finally, they sprint 500 yards to the finish line at the Oakover Arms Pub. Saturday, 13 December 2008. This is the 26th running of the event. Starting times: Walkers - 06:00. Runner 07:00. Relay 08:00. The race is a qualifying event for the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc. First Women's Relay Team was Kimberworth Striders Running Club, Kimmy Kittens.
